Who was Mars named after?
Mars is named after the Roman god of war and agriculture. The Ancient Romans stole the name from the Ancient Greeks since they called mars Ares, the Greek God of war. Mars protected those who fought for their communities, and stayed home to raise crops for food. People named the planet mars after mars because the colour of war is red. The planet Mars is known as the red planet due to its red colour which is from rust. The ancient Babylonians called mars Nergal which is the name of the god of fire, war and destruction whereas the Egyptians called it Her Desher which means the red one. This symbol on the left is a picture of a circle with an arrow connected with it. This symbolises the shield and spear that the God Ares used in wars.
